2018 Advent Guide

For each week this Advent season, we’ve included resources in our Liberti Church Advent Guide for your personal and communal worship. Each week includes a traditional Advent wreath devotional as well as several items created specifically for this guide by people in our own Liberti Church community to help us reflect throughout the Advent season. The items for reflection were created to encourage us to embrace this Advent season through different types of creative expression: written reflections and poetry, art pieces and songs.

We’re so thankful you are celebrating the Advent season with us!

Key Opportunities

Included each week of this year’s advent guide are opportunities to love and serve the people of our community and our world. As we celebrate Jesus’ birth in our gathered worship, let’s also celebrate it in our scattered worship – seeking to use our lives to bless those God has put us amongst. Just as Jesus left the glories of heaven, humbling himself to enter human history, may we pour ourselves out for the good of others this Advent.

You’re going to eat this season. So why not share at least some of those meal times with others? Call up new and old friends – people from your neighborhood or workplace and invite them into your home for a meal. In our culture this is a season of increased parties, festivities and socializing. Join in.

Liberti’s Community Christmas Breakfast | Dec. 9th
Speaking of meals, join us for a potluck breakfast before our worship service on Sunday, Dec. 9th at 9 a.m..
Sign up to bring a dish here

In addition to eating meals with people, think intentionally about being “on mission” this Advent season. Who are you praying for? Are you attending family/neighborhood/work holiday parties with a desire to love those people? What conversations can you have with people about what God’s been doing in your life or why Advent is significant in your life?

Mercy Opportunities This Advent

New Hope Ministries Christmas Blessing Drive | Sunday, Dec 2nd

Each Christmas season, one of our year-long community partners, New Hope Ministries, hosts a Christmas Blessing Drive. The surrounding community donates new gifts to stock their free Christmas store for the families who are clients in the New Hope programs. We encourage you, your family, etc. to buy a gift or two and bring them to Liberti Church’s worship service on Sunday, December 2nd for their deadline on the 3rd.
See the New Hope Christmas Blessing Wish List here.

In addition to purchasing gifts for Hew Hope’s Christmas store, this year we’ve been invited into another service opportunity: that of helping with the actual store! They’re looking for helpers on Monday, December 3rd through Thursday, December 6th and the following week from Monday, December 10th through Friday, December 14th. New Hope has created a sign up for volunteers to come and assist in varying roles during daytime and evening hours on those days. So invite a friend to join you or volunteer as a family on one of these days! What a wonderful opportunity to demonstrate Service and Generosity, two of our Rhythms of Grace, to those in need this holiday season.

Bethesda Mission Food Drive | Sunday, December 9th

Help stock our local rescue mission, Bethesda Mission, with food for the coming season. Bethesda hopes to collect 75,000 pounds of food by December 23 to help meet the needs in our area throughout the holiday season and stock their shelves for the upcoming winter.

This year, Liberti Church has been asked to focus our food donation on one specific item: boxes of instant mashed potatoes!
Our goal: to collect and donate 500 13oz. boxes of mashed potatoes!

Invite friends, neighbors, and co-workers to fill up a bag at the store with mashed potatoes and donate them to those in need this season. Bring your boxes to Liberti Church on Sunday, December 9th for collection.

Christmas Eve Offering for Ministries of Mercy | Monday, December 24th

This year, Liberti Church is donating our Christmas Eve offering benefit some of our partners in local ministries of mercy. Capital Area Pregnancy Center recently hired an additional nurse in order to expand their hours of service. Currently she is using a computer that cannot efficiently handle her workload. So $1,000 from our offering will be used to purchase a new computer for her.

In addition, Bethesda Mission is currently seeking to wrap up fundraising for its community center renovation project. An anonymous donor pledged a $25,000 matching grant during the month of December to help them do this, and Bethesda is asking each of its church partners, including Liberti Church, to collect $800 toward the match.

So please consider helping us reach this $1,800+ goal with a special financial gift on Christmas Eve.

We’re so thankful you are celebrating the Advent season with us!
